Uncle Nearest Full Proof Rye Whiskey

Tennessee does a lot of things well; growing rye is not one of them. So, we sought out the best from other states. Each of our inaugural barrels hails from New York, where they aged in new American oak for a minimum of four years after a short stint in B.C., where they were born.
These barrels began as a lofty experiment in 2017. Was it possible to create an ultra-smooth whiskey, with flavor galore, made from 100% rye? That was the question. The answer took a while but was well worth the wait: hell yeah.

A grain so easily grown in other states gets choked up in our soil. So, we went out to find the best straight rye and brought it back home to rest in used Uncle Nearest barrel. Where did we finally find it? New York, baby!
Born in the North, then raised for at least four years in the big city, before moving to God’s Country for some we-deserved rest.

An extensive search of historic newspapers unearthed a Scotch whiskey called V.O.P. – and no bourbons or bonded whiskies. In the Buffalo Trace Distillery archives, a 1932 letter from Theo Wiehe to Albert Blanton names V.O.P. as one of multiple brands listed in a request for United States Patent Office certificates of registration. In a subsequent 1933 letter, Blanton responds that V.O.P. is one of several brands the distillery did not own, ‘but which are used for customers on their bottling orders.

Vamonos Riendo is a high-altitude mountain mezcal sourcing a rare Tobala maguey that has been cultivated in the mountains for 14 years at 6,500 feet above sea level.
The high-altitude palenque allows them to distill at a lower temperature which prevents the burning away of their exquisite flavors and aromatics. They then triple distill to reveal remarkably bright flavor notes.

Tasting Notes:
Color: Brilliant amber.
Nose: Rich and decadent with butterscotch, toffee, vanilla and hints of nectarine and satsuma adding to the complexity. There is still a wisp of bready wheat present which is perfectly balanced with the spicy and rich oak notes.
Taste: Butterscotch and toffee are prominent in the taste but there are also hints of spiced praline which contribute to the long, round finish that is sweet without being cloying.
Finish: An outrageously well-crafted bourbon that pays homage to its source ingredients but shows that oak, the right distillate, and patience can create unparalleled depth and balance.
