New Holland Brett’s Barrel Single Malt Whiskey
American Whiskey, American Single Malt Whiskey, Whisky/Whiskey, Brands, New Holland Spirits, AlcoholIn 2005, eight years after opening New Holland Brewing Co., Brett Vanderkamp decided to take on a new challenge of distilling high-quality craft spirits in the state of Michigan. With the help of some friends, he built a still from a soup kettle and began distilling the first batches of whiskey produced in Michigan since the end of prohibition in 1933. In an ongoing effort to discover new and better flavor, Brett and our distillers are continuing to experiment with whiskey and test new ingredients, techniques, and barrels. These bottlings are aptly named: Brett’s Barrel.
Each one unique; these bottlings are limited to just a few barrels and may never be seen or tasted again. The numbers and letters on this label represent the date code placed on the barrel when it was first filled with whiskey. We hope that each of these bottles provides you with new flavors that highlight the range of possibilities in the world of whiskey.

In the early 1800s, European settlers in the southern United States blended their corn with a native variety. The result was Bloody Butcher corn: instantly recognizable for its striking deep red kernels and legendary fruity, buttery flavor. Unsuitable for industrial scale farming, this heirloom variety is grown by only a few farmers.
Our Bloody Butcher Bourbon celebrates our nation’s early agriculture heritage. We sourced Bloody Butcher corn from Castle Valley Mill in Doylestown PA. just 25 miles from our distillery and combined it with malted rye and barley from Deer Creek Malt House. This blend of corn, barley, and rye gives the bourbon a balanced flavor with notes of milk chocolate, butter, leather, and stone fruit on the palate, and dry spice on the finish.

This bottled of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey is distilled using a unique pre-prohibition method. With 62% Corn, 19% Rye, and 19% Malted Barley and single-distilled on a batch still, this bourbon is born with a rich, grain forward complexity. Aging in 6.4 gallon barrels for 8-12 months imparts a fully matured flavor profile. Sweet honeysuckle and cherry.
When Kentucky enacted prohibition in 1920, there were 26 distilleries in Bourbon County – the birthplace of Bourbon Whiskey. Hartfield & Co was the first to re-open post-prohibition, This bottle contains some of the first legally produced Bourbon from Bourbon County in over 94 years. The New Riff Backsetter series offers profound evidence for the impact of the sour mash process on whiskey flavor. We are firmly committed to the production of sour mash whiskeys, according to Kentucky tradition; yet we are also committed to creating a new riff. For this release, we have used backset from peated malted barley in the mashing of our standard Bourbon recipe. The resultant smoky flavor is hauntingly unique, with layers of peat enveloping creamy-spicy Bourbon. Enjoy our latest riff on one of Kentucky’s oldest whiskey traditions.
