It’s only natural that Iowa makes great straight bourbon whiskey – after all, the state grows more corn than anywhere else in the country. The dramatic seasonal temperature swings of The Great Planes help create whiskies with a soft, clean, yet spicy character.

Aged for five years, this straight bourbon whiskey (made from 74% Corn, 14% Rye, and 12% Malted Barley) is truly in its prime. It has white flowers and vanilla on the nose, a complex plate with white chocolate and baking spice, and a very long finish.

Cedar Ridge is one of the few distilleries that make malted rye whiskey, made with germinated rye grain. This 5-year-old single cask, made with 51% Malted Rye, 34% Rye, 12% Corn, and 3% Malted Barley, shows why the style is worth your attention. It has a citrusy nose, with lemon, custard. And a rich depth on the palate. The malted rye grain adds a complex, biscuity, and toasty flavor and a great mouthfeel.

Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey

Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Mountain Laurel Spirits, which has revived Pennsylvania’s historic distilling tradition. The State’s whiskey history dates to the colonial era, but by the 1990s Pennsylvania rye whiskey had disappeared completely. Dad’s hat has brought it back to life, driven by a deep commitment to the State’s history, farmers, and culture.

This straight rye whiskey, our first from Dad’s Hat, was made from a mashbill of 80% rye, 15% malted barley, and 5% malted rye and aged in a 53-gallon barrel for 5 years, It is fresh and grassy, with spearmint on the nose, and candied orange, chocolates, and clove on the palate.

Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Boulder Spirits in Colorado. The Distillery was founded by Scotsman Alastair Brogan, who has brought Scottish whisky-making traditions to the high peaks of the Colorado Rockies. This dry, high-elevation environment makes for bold and unique spirits.

We love heavily peated single malts, and this cask is one of the finest we’ve found in the U.S. made from 100% peated Scottish barely, this cask was aged for 5 years in a new oak cask. It is very smoky, with flavors of smoked figs, bacon-wrapped dates, bitter orange marmalade, and fresh-baked brownies.

This cask was distilled on Smooth Ambler’s own column still from a mash bill of 71.5% corn, 21.5% wheat, and 7% malted barley and was aged for 5 years. With toasted almond, white chocolate, and cranberries on the nose, the palate is rich and spicy, with clove, black cherry, and deep oak flavors.
