At Maker’s Mark, we created a propriety wood finishing process to explore unique expressions offer signature bourbon, originally crafted by my grandparents in 1953.

For years, our Private Selection program has allowed our closest friends and family to create their own version of Maker’s Mark by developing s custom barrel recipe with 10 hand-selected wood staves. After retiring our first stave, we were curious to see if there were any hidden gems that were never found among the 1,001 possible recipe combinations.

The Lost Recipe Series shares these unique recipes that have never been tasted before and that will never be made again, each crafted with a retired stave from our Private Selection archives. We hope you enjoy this special find as much as we do.

At Maker’s Mark, our Wood Finishing Series explores unique expressions of our signature Maker’s  Mark whisky, using natural flavors from wood to amplify certain characteristics.

For the Distillery Exclusive releases, we have partnered with Independent Stave Co. to develop unique flavors possible from wood. The wood staves are seasoned and then either baked or toasted. We then add 10 staves to each barrel of Maker’s Mark and place it in our limestone cellar for an extra finishing process.

This creates a distinctive version of Maker’s Mark that explores the flavor and character of our signature whisky. Enjoy!

Maker’s Mark will be Party Horses official bourbon partner for 2022 and supply limited-edition Party Horses commemorative labels to 1,000 early adopters in the coming months. Jacob Rieger & Company was founded in 1887 in Kansas City’s West Bottoms Livestock Exchange district. The brand offered over 100 alcoholic products and took pride in maintaining a quarter of a million unique customers by offering mail-order delivery services. In 1919, Prohibition was enacted by the federal government and wasn’t reversed until 1933. J. Rieger & Co. was a casualty at the time, but was not destined to be lost forever. Now, a century after Prohibition, we are proud once again to call Kansas City home.
