TASTING NOTES

Color: Tawny

Aroma: Fruity and sweet initially with very distinctive top notes of zesty orange and lemon peel, vanilla custard and treacle toffee.

Taste: More delicate background notes are revealed such as bergamot, sweet pastries and fresh thyme along with white pepper on the palate.

Finish: This is finally followed by a smouldering peat smoke and sooty campfire notes.

Laphroaig 35 Year Old Strong Characters Dugald Johnston is a rare, exceptional Islay single malt Scotch whisky, paying tribute to Dugald Johnston, a pivotal figure in Laphroaig’s history. Distilled with the island’s signature peat smoke and maritime influence, this expression has matured for 35 years, resulting in a complex and refined profile. Notes of rich dried fruits, dark chocolate, and seaweed intertwine with layers of smoke, oak, and a hint of iodine. Crafted in homage to Johnston’s era (1847-1877), this limited edition is a testament to Laphroaig’s enduring legacy and tradition.

Our whisky making tradition has been passed down by distillery managers since the first drop rolled off the still in 1815. Ian Hunter, Bessie Williamson, John MacDougal, Denise Nicole, Iain Henderson, John Campbell and our newest Distillery Manager, Barry MacAffer, have all been protective custodians of the art of Laphroaig.

Each brought their own influence, of course, but all respected the unique elements that make Laphroaig the whisky it is. The Kilbride Stream, hand-cut peat, floor malted barley, cold-smoking kilns, mash tuns, copper alchemy and the subtlety of oak aging. Each year our Distillery Manager, John Campell, crafts a limited edition malt to celebrate the Friends of Laphroaig and friendship (“Càirdeas” in Gaelic).

Càirdeas 2021 is triple matured. The first maturation is in 1st Fill American Oak ex-Bourbon Barrels, the second in American Oak ex-Bourbon Quarter Casks, and finally finished in European Oak Hogsheads originally containing PX sherry. Each cask combines to create a complex Laphroaig expression full go character. The influence of the PX casks adds a sweetness that is balanced with oak and all the much-loved classic Laphroaig flavours of peat, smoke, and salt. Bottled at casks strength to ensure all the rich and intricate flavours come through on this distinct and unique expression.

Celebrating 30 years of Friends of Laphroaig. Càirdeas (that’s Gaelic for friendship) is our annual expression created for our Friends. It’s 30 years since we founded Friends of Laphroaig, to celebrate we’ve created an ode to two well-loved releases, Triple Wood and PX. This 10YO is aged in ex-bourbon and quarter casks before being finished in PX casks, adding fruity sweetness to the peat smoke that our friends know and love.

Laphroaig Elements redefines what our whisky can be. The second in the series, Elements 2.0, embraces a radically extended fermentation time that allows more flavor to evolve from the malted barley.

With 115 hours of fermentation – over twice the normal time – Elements 2.0 is a daring experiment that reveals sweeter fruit notes and a softer peated style, with the warm smokiness of our Islay single malt.

Laphroaig Elements redefines what our whisky can be. Our first Elements Edition, 1.0, explores experimentation with mashing and fermentation style to reveal an unexpected new dimension to our signature style.

Using two types of wort and mashing in old and new style tuns, Elements 1.0 finest tunes the process to create a non-chill filtered 100% Islay malt with greater tropical fruit notes, without losing any of our signature phenolic and maritime pettiness.
